Shenyang got a major snowfall back to back as the year ended and the new one started. The factory area was quickly covered with white snow—very pretty, indeed, but that also brought a really big problem: it became quite difficult to get to the work. Because of the icy surfaces and snow pile-ups, if the paths wouldn’t be cleared right away, not only would people have problems getting to work, but first of all, it would be very dangerous.
The enterprise pleaded for help in snow-removal and the reply was quick and full of energy. And still, the employees didn’t have to stop their very different jobs to take part as they got equipped with shovels and brooms and suddenly they were all together in front of the office building starting to remove the snow. There was no one to give orders, no one to plan the division of the group as all the working was done naturally and everyone chipped in with some shoveling, some sweeping, and a few took up the task of piling the getting rid of snow to the sides.
Normally, the same people would be the ones in charge of running machines, or processing the orders, or helping with technical support, but at that moment every one of them became a part of the snow-removal squad. Despite the fact that the weather was very cold and the wind was quite strong, the overall mood on the site was chill as the people were laughing and joking with one another. To the workers’ surprise, an hour later, all the major walkways of the factory had been cleared enough for it to be safe and reassuring to walk around. Actually, the whole situation depicts the way we usually work. The snow removal occasion offered an incident that everyone will remember.
There was a weekend in the early part of the month and another heavy snow fall. Wang, the Master, was there at his duty post while the rest of the factory grounds seemed to be virtually empty that day. Because he witnessed the snow snow falling in quite a heavy manner, he then thought that the employees who would be coming back to work on Monday might encounter difficulty in the way to work; his worry even extended to the point where one could imagine that the icy conditions could hamper normal production activities. His spontaneous initiative was to grab his snow-removal equipment and start clearing the snow all on his own. Even though no one was there to give the task or call him up, he managed to single-handedly clear the key access routes. When everybody came back on Monday and saw the immaculate, snow-free paths, the realization dawned on them—the good Master Wang had done it all by himself. They were all touched and really greatly admired his spirit.
Certainly, this simple act shows the heart of our team: not a wish to be in the limelight but a real readiness—at the right time—to work overtime and use their own initiative. One heavy snowfall does not last long, still, what stays is a deeper feeling of belonging to the team and a more determined commitment in our performance.
