What is a Safety Rupture Disc? Analysis of Its Working Principle and Characteristics

2026-03-06

Safety Rupture Disc is a safety device used in pressure vessels. When the pressure inside the vessel exceeds a preset value, the rupture disc automatically bursts, rapidly releasing the pressure to prevent the equipment from exploding or leaking due to overpressure. The working principle of a safety rupture disc is based on the strength characteristics of the diaphragm material; when the pressure reaches a critical value, the diaphragm material quickly fails, thereby achieving pressure relief.

Structure and Materials of Safety Rupture Discs

Structure: A Safety Rupture Disc is typically made from metallic or non-metallic materials and features a weakened area (i.e., the rupture point). Depending on the application requirements, rupture discs can be designed in flat, domed, or other shapes.

Materials: Common materials include metals such as stainless steel, nickel alloys, titanium alloys, and non-metallic materials like polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The choice of material depends on factors such as the operating pressure, temperature range, and characteristics of the medium.

Working Principle of Safety Rupture Discs

Pressure Accumulation Stage: Under normal operating conditions, the pressure inside the vessel is transmitted to the external environment through the supporting parts of the rupture disc. As the pressure gradually increases, the stress on the rupture disc also rises.

Reaching the Burst Point: When the pressure inside the vessel reaches or exceeds the set value of the rupture disc, the stress at the rupture point reaches the ultimate strength of the material. At this moment, the Safety Rupture Disc fractures at that point, forming an opening.

Pressure Relief Stage: Once the Safety Rupture Disc bursts, the high-pressure gas or liquid inside the vessel is rapidly released to the external environment through this opening. The sharp drop in pressure helps protect the container from further damage.

Subsequent Handling: After bursting, a new Safety Rupture Disc usually needs to be installed to restore normal equipment operation. Simultaneously, the burst event should be recorded and analyzed to optimize equipment design and operating conditions.

Characteristics of Safety Rupture Discs

Safety Rupture Discs have a low tolerance for burst pressure deviation, allowing equipment to operate stably within a safe pressure range.

Safety Rupture Discs can be customized based on parameters such as medium characteristics, temperature range, and pressure levels, meeting the needs of various industries.

Safety Rupture Discs undergo 100% factory pressure testing and seal testing. Key components have been validated for fatigue life, enabling them to withstand numerous pressure cycles.
