3. Selection process of bursting discs:
(1) Data collection:
- System maximum working pressure, design bursting pressure, temperature range.
- Medium composition, phase state, corrosiveness, cleanliness.
- Installation location space restrictions and regulatory standards (such as ASME, API, GB/T 567, etc.).
(2) Selection of bursting disc type:
- Select the type of bursting disc according to the medium and pressure (such as the reverse arch type is suitable for high-pressure impurity-containing media).
- Confirm whether additional functions are required: such as discharge volume indicator, debris capture device.
(3) Material selection of bursting disc:
Medium characteristics | Recommended materials |
Ordinary gas/liquid | 316L stainless steel |
Strong acid (such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid) | Hastelloy C-276, Tantalum |
High temperature steam (>300℃) | Inconel 625 |
(4) Verification and testing of bursting disc:
- Require the supplier to provide a bursting pressure test report (the test medium and temperature must be indicated).
- Considering batch differences, it is recommended to reserve a bursting pressure tolerance of ±5%.
4. Notes on installation and maintenance of bursting discs:
- Installation direction: The reverse arch bursting disc should be installed in the direction marked by the arrow to avoid failure due to reverse pressure.
- Clamp matching: Ensure that the clamp is compatible with the bursting disc model and the sealing surface is not damaged.
- Regular inspection: In a corrosive environment, it is recommended to check the surface condition every 6 months.
5. Common selection errors and avoidance:
Ignoring the impact of back pressure: Failure to select a back pressure resistant bursting disc leads to premature rupture.
Insufficient material compatibility: Medium corrosion shortens the life of the bursting disc.
Mislabeling of pressure parameters: Failure to consider the correction of burst pressure due to temperature (burst pressure usually decreases at high temperature).
6. Case analysis:
Case 1: Overpressure protection of reactor in chemical plant:
- Medium: Chlorine (strongly corrosive).
- Pressure: Design burst pressure 2.5MPa, working temperature 80℃.
- Selection: reverse arch bursting disc, material Hastelloy C-276, with polytetrafluoroethylene coating.
Case 2: Natural gas pipeline pressure relief:
- Medium: Natural gas containing trace amounts of hydrogen sulfide.
- Pressure: Burst pressure 10MPa, back pressure resistance required.
- Selection: Reverse arch bursting disc, material Inconel 625.
